To put this in perspective, it would take 60 of today's clean diesel trucks to generate the emissions of just one pre-1988 truck according to the Diesel Technology Forum, a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness of diesel engines, fuels and technology. The Forum points out that more than 80% of all freight in the United States is moved by diesel powered trucks, railroads, and marine vessels.
Emissions from diesel trucks and buses have been reduced 99% for nitrogen oxides (NOx) -- an ozone precursor -- and 98% for particulates over the past 10 years. These dramatic reductions were accomplished by the widespread adoption of more efficient engines and more effective emissions control technology. In addition, the nationwide availability of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel -- mandated since 2010 -- has reduced sulfur emissions by 97 percent.
